A Brief History of Gardner MA
The city of Gardner MA was named after Thomas Gardner, and while the area was already inhabited, the land was first settled by Europeans in 1764 and was officially incorporated as a town in 1785. At the beginning of the 1800s, Gardner became a powerhouse in the lumber and furniture industries, which is where it got the name "The Chair City" and "The Furniture Capital of New England". Roughly a century later, there were twenty chair factories, producing over four million chairs per year. Gardner was eventually incorporated as a city in 1923.
